March 31, 2008 (link) 11:00 PM A series of things that are next to other things: In this must-see Youtube clip, the young lady performing with Tiny Tim is billed as Eleanor Barooshian, aka Baruchian. She was best known as a member of the girl group "The Cake", and -- believe it or not -- was Tiny's girlfriend at the time of this film. At some point she changed her name to Chelsea Lee, and she has a Myspace page under that name here. She lists the Soft Machine as one of her esteemed friends, and if you scroll up a bit to her jukebox, you'll see that it contains a song by erstwhile Soft Machine member Kevin Ayers -- "Eleanor's Cake (Which Ate Her)", from the Joy of a Toy album. I'd heard the song before, but didn't know the backstory; as you can probably infer, it was written for her on the occasion of her (apparently acrimonious) departure from The Cake. My Singing a Song in the Morning compilation CD takes its title from another song by Kevin Ayers, which is the next-to-last track on the disc (as can be seen here). The final track is Shooby Taylor's rather moving rendition of "Over the Rainbow", as accompanied by Erroll Garner. And to bring this full circle: in the book Songs in the Key of Z -- kindly purchased for me by my youngest sister a couple birthdays ago -- Shooby Taylor is, of course, but a few chapters away from Tiny.
