February 10, 2006 (link) 1:26 AM In 1993, Meat Loaf topped the charts with "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)". (Read that in a Casey Kasem voice for maximum effect.) Here's the beginning of the chorus: Seven years earlier, in 1986, Y. Bhekhirst (also known as, well, a lot of things) released the Hot in the Airport cassette, featuring the track "I Will Sing". The melody to Y. Bhekhirst's song begins as follows: Notice the bracketed sections: the interval pattern is exactly the same (Y. Bhekhirst's version is a fourth lower), and the rhythms are quite similar -- if the triplet were "detripletized" (made into a regular quarter + eighth), they too would be exactly the same. This isn't one of those only-in-analysis resemblances, either -- it's quite striking when you hear it. Was Marvin Lee Aday a fan of Jose Hugo Diaz Guzman? (They're one year apart in age!) Did Meat Loaf and his collaborator unwittingly channel a little-known outsider artist? Or is it just an incredible coincidence? (I know I've mentioned this before, but it deserves the full treatment, y'know.) Current music: you can probably guess what mash-up is playing in my mind's ear. |
