BANK SELECT IN FINALE 3.2: HOW TO DO IT All right, here's how to get the patches you want from the UltraProteus in Finale 3.2 without setting them by hand or restricting yourself to Bank 0. This method is tricky and clumsy, but it's the only one I know. Here we go! (Oh yes, save your piece before you start this.) 1) First and foremost, know what you want. It's a pain to try and change what you're about to do after you've done it, so have the patches you want, and especially the bank you want, already in mind. Also, have a completely blank measure at the beginning of all the parts. And turn "Send Patches Before Play" (in the Playback Options box) off, if it's on. 2) Go to the MIDI Tool (round with five dots, on the main palette) and double-click the first measure, in any staff (probably you'll want to start with the uppermost). Check the MIDI Menu to make sure Continuous Data is checked. If not, make it so by selecting it. You're looking at a graph of the MIDI data for that measure...it should be blank. Click on the third icon from the top, the rectangular one with the slider. (That's Continuous Controllers) When the dialog box pops up, for Controller, type in 32 if it is not already there. Controller 32 is MIDI's Bank Select Controller. Hit Return. (Or click OK, as is true throughout this sheet.) 3) Now, there's a little window right of the column of icons from which you selected the Continuous Controller icon. You want to select an area that begins all the way to the left and ends about 1/3 to 1/2way through the measure. (More on why later.) You should have a black block as tall as the vertical axis that starts at the beginning of the measure graph, and ends at the above 1/3 to 1/2way. 4) On the MIDI Menu, go to Set To... In that dialog box, you want to type in the BANK NUMBER you want, NOT the patch #. Then, hit Return. You should see a tiny little horizontal graph appear on the chart, each bar reaching only to about 1, 2, or 3...your bank #. 5) Now, select the icon below the one that you chose before, the one that looks like several squares stacked (Program Change Icon), and select an area that does not start at the left edge, but begins at least a little bit after. Extend it as far as you like, even to the end of the measure. It doesn't matter, so long as this area begins after the bank select message. The reason for this is MIDI needs to receive the Bank Select message, then the Patch Change message. It won't respond correctly to the opposite sequence. This also explains the dummy measure; it's used to get everything in order before the notes start coming, as otherwise you'd get a first note of whatever used to be there before it corrected itself. However, if your piece begins with a rest in all parts, you can PROBABLY skip the dummy measure (never tried it, though, so you're on your own). Anyway... 6) Go again to Set To... Type in your patch # this time, remembering that the UltraProteus patch system is "off" by 1, and thus UltraProteus Patch 4, for instance, would be Finale's 5. So add 1 to whatever the UltraProteus tells you. Hit Return unless you prefer looking at this dialog box to composing, in which case you'll get your wish. 7) If you have more staves to do, use the four-way arrows in the main box to switch staves (up and down; left and right change measures). Then repeat the process. Otherwise, close down the box and play it back to make sure it's OK. Hope it works; if you have any questions, or finesses, let me know. If it doesn't work, then don't save what you've done to it; instead, open it up anew and try again. If it still doesn't work, ask me and I'll try to help. Good luck and don't throw anything out the window.
